POBR Day 3
7/8/19
Day three,
Captain’s log: My #1 Crew was on breakfast detail this morning. Flapjacks for
everyone! Regular and chocolate chip, you can guess which ones were popular
amongst the campers. Once we were all full, bellies no longer grumbling, we
loaded up and headed to Potato Hill! Beautiful, but sadly with the overcast
Mt.Adams was not in view, barely up to playing peek-a-boo with its bottom half.
Still a splendid hike otherwise, I really need to do more cardio *phew*.
Stopped in and
took in the majesty of the huge ponderosa pine, it boasts the title of the
“Oldest tree in the state” was a nice little pit stop, I fell asleep on the
drive back to camp….obviously.
Flower
Pressing: Exactly what it sounds like haha, but really though, collected leaves
and flowers while on our hike at Potato Hill, it seems like the fields were a
lot more lush as a child, but it could just be the wrong season…. Im not sure
myself what can be done to revive this area, a controlled burn perhaps, maybe
just closing it up even, at least for a couple seasons, to let nature come in
and reclaim the area. I know that would be difficult and sad considering my
people have been coming up here for several generations to live and harvest
berries, but who knows, it may be necessary. As I said though, I wouldn’t know
entirely what to do. Those are my thoughts, but would like to study up on the
subject. Preservation and nature, the environment, otherwise how will our
children know….. that would be a travesty, for our children to no longer have a
mountain to call home. Nowhere to go when they feel that urge to connect and be
one with the land… Anyway, those are my thoughts at the moment. And no longer
feel like discussing the matter at this time.
Pressed the
flowers and leaves collected, can’t wait to see how those turn out and to learn
the names of them all, always SO fun to learn these things, and have my brain
enriched with such knowledge.
End of the day
circle time: Discussion about possible causes of the slow death of the
huckleberry. Smart group of people weve got here, a lot of pretty sound
theories. I hope that someone can figure out how to save them, as they are an
integral part of our way of life. Dr.Black told us all about this group of
people who have spliced huckleberry with blueberry so that they could mass grow
these monstrosities at lower altitudes….. SO unnatural and its just asking for
a punishment from nature…..
